Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic inflammatory and gastric-acid-related condition that causes significant discomfort to patients and may lead to persistent symptoms. The safety of oral PPIs and omeprazole in the management of GERD has not been systematically evaluated, and the efficacy of PPI therapy for the treatment of GERD has not been established. Therefore, this study evaluated the safety of PPI therapy for GERD in a large cohort of patients treated with a PPI.
A total of 6,853 patients who were treated with PPI therapy for GERD were recruited from a population-based cohort study using the Dutch nationwide population-based cohort. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty of The University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, the Netherlands.
Patients who were diagnosed with GERD (at least 1 of the following criteria:defined as a symptom of reflux greater than 3 or more than 12 days after meals or in the absence of symptoms associated with gastric reflux, or in the absence of symptoms associated with gastric reflux, or in the presence of a persistent acid-related disorder, or in the absence of symptoms associated with a persistent acid-related disorder, or in the presence of a proton-pump inhibitor prescription, in the absence of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or with a history of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or peptic ulcer disease; or a history of gastrointestinal diseases, with a history of severe gastrointestinal disease or a history of severe symptoms, such as severe peptic ulcer disease, and a history of severe symptoms of gastric and duodenal ulcers, with a history of gastrointestinal problems, and a history of peptic ulcer disease, with a history of gastrointestinal disorders, with a history of severe symptoms, or a history of severe symptoms of gastrointestinal problems, had a history of GI problems or had a history of symptoms of GERD, or a history of symptoms of GERD, had a previous history of esophageal ulcers or gastric or duodenal ulcers and a history of a history of a gastric or duodenal ulcer, or a previous history of gastric or duodenal ulcers or a history of symptoms of GERD or of symptoms of GERD, or a history of symptoms of GERD.
